Aftab talks about his role in Daddy cool

"My character in Daddy Cool feels hot, hence takes off his clothes" - Aftab Shivdasani

Say Aftab Shivdasani and you see a man who is ever smiling and ready to make his audiences laugh. Ok, so he has done dramatic roles in films like Kasoor, Ankahee and Speed amongst other and seen good appreciation coming his way too. Still, when he is seen in a setup like Daddy Cool which promises ample 'masti' and 'dhamaal' all over again, you know for sure that Aftab is gearing up his audiences for a laugh riot. As the film inches closer to the release, Joginder Tuteja catches up with the young actor who would be caught in his underpants for most duration of Daddy Cool.

Daddy Cool appears to be a full on fun affair with a holds-no-bar approach. Is that the right way to describe the film?
It's not just 'holds-no-bar' but also a real mad-mad outing for everyone, whether the characters or the viewers. It's a black comedy with an assortment of characters who assemble at a funeral. Also, in spite of its genre, the comedy always maintains its situational appeal. No one out there is deliberately shown to be doing something mad. Each of the characters behave in a certain way because there was no other way they could have reacted to a situation like this. This is what makes the entire fun element even more enjoyable because things aren't forced down the audiences throat.

Tell me honestly; are you happy with the marketing effort that has been put in the film?
The kind of scale that the film comes with, I guess the entire promotion and marketing has been pretty decent. The concept is the biggest selling point of the film. Moreover, the makers were looking at a four week window to promote the film and in this aspect they have done full justice to Daddy Cool. The title song has already become quite popular so I am positive that the film will find good audiences for itself this Friday.

Aftab Shivdasani It's a known fact that the makers (Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria) have bought the rights of Death At A Funeral for the film. Is Daddy Cool a frame to frame copy?
No, it is not actually. The basic concept of Death At A Funeral is intact though with Daddy Cool being loosely based on it. Tulip is playing my fiance in Daddy Cool and funeral is that of her uncle.

There are other actors like Sunil Shetty, Javed Jaffrey, Ashish Chowdhry, Rajpal Yadav and Chunky Pandey in the film as well. Did you have to do anything extra special to make sure that you were noticed in spite of the huge crowd?
Actually, I didn't really have to make a conscious effort since the character of Michael is such that it stands out. He is the only guy who is not sync with others. Also, the film's plot is such that everybody is quite prominent and important. See, the film is about a dozen odd characters and is not really a single person film. In fact this thought itself didn't crop up in my mind that whether I have to do something special to stand out.

In any case, cat fights happen only when there are too many female actors around, isn't it?
Well, when there are so many men around then dog fights happen as well [Laughs]. Thankfully, none of that happened in Daddy Cool since we all were genuinely jelling and bonding with each other.

Ok, tell me about this one. Why are you seen in your underpants for most part of the film?
[Says with a straight face] Because Michael, the character that I play in the film, is feeling hot!

Aftab Shivdasani You can't be serious...
No, I am actually. This is in fact is what happens to Michael. He accidentally gets some drugs in his mouth as a result of which he starts hallucinating. He starts taking off his clothes and in the end is seen only in his underpants and a tie. Over and above the appearance factor, what really makes this character funny is the fact that when everyone is talking chalk, he is talking cheese. He just does not remain in his senses at all and starts doing everything exactly opposite to what people around him are doing.

Are you like this for the entire duration of the film?
It's like this towards the latter half of the film when drugs start getting into his brains. [Laughs] Once this happens, there are actually no boundaries to his character!

Due to 'minimal clothing' appearance in the film, did you have to work extra hard on your body to make it look presentable on screen?
[Laughs] On the contrary, I was not training at that time and that's the reason why I was actually looking a little fat in the film. It's ok though since this went with my character in the film. So no abs but only flab here for me in Daddy Cool [winks]!
